About Rewiring Aotearoa

We’re all about the win-wins. We’re a kiwi non-profit that is building a future where every Kiwi saves money on energy bills, reduces their carbon emissions and has the resilience to keep their lights on and homes warm. Through data research, communications, and public engagement, we’re educating the public on the benefits of replacing fossil fuel machines with zero-emissions electric alternatives, and providing the pathways for every household and business to make the switch.

We’re a small team of professionals with experience across climate, energy, policy, data and storytelling. We conduct research, create tools & resources, and engage directly with government, businesses and local communities. Our aim is to make it accessible for everyone to electrify the households, farms, and the economy as a whole. This is so that Kiwis can frontfoot the energy transformation we need for a more affordable, healthy, modern climate future.

About the opportunity: data generalist

We are looking for a well-rounded data professional who will contribute to the foundations of our work - the data that forms the foundations of all our evidence, insights, and communications.

Upcoming projects may include:

  • Developing models about household energy use.
  • Building data products such as interactive online calculators to help the general public plan their electrification journey.
  • Collecting, enriching, and analysing data about the energy needs and behaviours of households, farms, and businesses.

Since we are a small team, this is an opportunity for someone who can both be on the tools delivering the work, and also contributing to our wider data strategy. We currently use Google Sheets and Python for data analysis, but being a young organisation, our tech stack and roadmap are still being shaped.

Core skills

Required

  • Minimum 2 years experience with data engineering and data analysis. This includes data collecting, cleaning, writing production-level code, and modelling
  • Ability to communicate insights effectively to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders, understanding their needs and tailoring insights and data visualisations accordingly
  • Experience working independently and handling ambiguity in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
  • Excitement about making a difference to New Zealand’s climate future, where the benefits are equitably distributed
  • Eagerness to learn

Nice to have

  • Experience in Python
  • Experience building user-facing web apps and interactive visualisations (e.g. React, d3.js, RShiny, Streamlit, Dash)
  • Experience leading projects and/or product delivery, including external stakeholder/client management
  • Ability to think about data strategy at a higher level to ensure that our data assets are usable, maintainable, and secure
  • Understanding of data ethics and data privacy
  • Understanding of energy systems, climate change and policy, and/or or economics
  • Experience writing academic papers

What we provide

  • Remote work from anywhere in NZ
  • Flexible hours
  • A competitive salary range, based on experience.
  • Opportunity to be part of an impact-led non-profit that is moving the needle on decarbonisation in New Zealand

If the sound of our mission excites you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t have all the listed experience. In addition, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team; we cannot succeed in our mission without it.
