Ecosystem lead

About Rewiring Aotearoa

We’re all about the win-wins. We’re a kiwi non-profit that is building a future where every Kiwi saves money on energy bills, reduces their carbon emissions and has the resilience to keep their lights on and homes warm. Through data research, communications, and public engagement, we’re educating the public on the benefits of replacing fossil fuel machines with electric alternatives, and providing the pathways for every household and business to make the switch.

We’re a small team of professionals with experience across climate, energy, policy, data and storytelling. We conduct research, create tools & resources, and engage directly with government, businesses and local communities. Our aim is to make it accessible for everyone to electrify the households, farms, and the economy as a whole. This is so that Kiwis can frontfoot the energy transformation we need for a more affordable, healthy, modern climate future.

About the opportunity: ecosystem lead

Note: this role is open to those located in New Zealand

Just as we’re pushing for a more decentralised energy system, we’re also building a decentralised network of community groups that will help to spread our message and put pressure on decision makers in local and central Government. The community movement is crucial to support Rewiring Aotearoa’s advocacy and reform work so we are seeking an Ecosystem Lead who will build and nurture these community networks.

This involves engaging with grassroots organisations, community groups, local councils, rural communities, businesses and industry groups and helping them push for rapid electrification.

This is a hybrid role that will require travel across the motu for face-to-face relationship-building with the communities that you’re supporting.

The ideal candidate will have experience in community mobilisation, strong organisational skills, great communication online and in-person, and an interest in climate, energy, and community wellbeing.

Core skills

Required

  • Proven experience in community engagement, mobilisation, or ecosystem management, preferably within a nonprofit or advocacy context. This includes both developing strategy and execution.
  • Event planning experience, to guide community groups to organise workshops and training sessions.
  • Producing & providing educational resources such as fact sheets, templates, and tools (in collaboration with our data & comms team) for community groups to use in their advocacy.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including empathy for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.
  • Excitement about making a difference to New Zealand’s climate future, where the benefits are equitably distributed.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and domain knowledge as required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with grant management.
  • Familiarity with tools for community engagement & communication platforms (e.g., Slack, Common Room, Zoom, social media).
  • Experience with capacity building and volunteer management.
  • Understanding of local government.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Understanding of energy systems, climate change and policy, and/or or economics

What we provide

  • Flexible hours.
  • A competitive salary range, based on experience.
  • Opportunity to be part of an impact-led non-profit that is moving the needle on electrification in New Zealand.

If the sound of our mission excites you, we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t have all the listed experience. In addition, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team; we cannot succeed in our mission without it.
