Household Calculator

Every household’s energy situation is different. But every household can benefit from electrification in some way. Plug in your own data and see how much money you could save, how much the upgrades will cost and what impact it will have on your household’s emissions.

Make it happen

This time, it’s personal

Many New Zealand homes still rely on fossil fuels to heat their water, keep the place warm, cook their food and get around. A surprisingly large chunk of New Zealand’s emissions can be linked back to these ‘dinner table decisions’, but these fossil fuel machines could be upgraded tomorrow with more efficient electric equivalents and fuelled by rooftop solar, batteries and the grid.

This would save most New Zealanders money and slash our country’s emissions and that’s why our mission at Rewiring Aotearoa is to electrify as many of them as possible by 2030. Our research uses averages to show overall trends and our electrification guides need to be broad to help as many people as possible.

We realise every household has different energy needs and will be at a different stage of their electrification journey, so these averages and general advice may not be relevant to everyone's situation. Some households drive less. Others use more hot water. But this calculator makes power personal and even offers some helpful advice (you can find out how we calculate the results here and if you have any questions email us).

Save cash, slash carbon

"We're just one small household. What can we do about climate change?"

It's a common response to a big, complicated, global problem, but focusing on your fuels and switching to electric machines can have a massive impact on your emissions. If all these 'dinner table decisions' are electric, it could eventually add up to zero.
Our calculator also shows you how much impact you can have on the environment and why it’s so important to create a plan to make your home electric.

What's next?

If you’ve already electrified everything in your home, you’ll already know about the benefits. But there are other ways you can help maintain the momentum and have an impact, like joining or starting a local community group, spreading the word in your area and influencing others to follow suit.
