Overall, we are at about 55% self sufficiency and I have calculated a 9 to 10 year payback at 5%. Across the year, our daily energy cost is $6.13 per day – the price of a coffee.

I have been on the electric journey for a while having had a full EV car for five years, use an E bike and installed solar (no battery) about 18 months ago on a new house [a 10kw system that cost $22,000 to install].

I thought I would share the result of my first full year on solar. This covers:

  1. Running the house (280m2 with lots of glass, very well insulated though, and people who like to be warm in winter and cool in summer!!)
  2. A spa pool
  3. Ducted heating and cooling
  4. Charging the EV at home 95% of the time (about 12,000km a year distance).

Overall, we are at about 55% self sufficiency and I have calculated a 9 to 10 year payback at 5%, but to be fair if I added in lower fuel cost in my car versus petrol it would be a lot sooner assuming a relative car cost EV vs Petrol.

Across the year, our daily energy cost is $6.13 per day – the price of a coffee.

Keep up the good work as I do believe this is the way of the future.
